Buy a venti chai latte today. Speaking of divestment, Oxfam divested from Starbucks. Well, I never thought much of Oxfam anyway; they are darlings of Body Shop founder Anita whatserface, and they also published that horrible poster with the blood orange advocating that people boycott Israeli products. So I can't exactly say I'm shocked.

Let's face it: Starbucks coffee sucks, but not only does Starbucks support Israel and the coalition troops, it deserves our support because it lets anyone use its bathrooms! Which means that Starbucks has become the de facto public restroom of Manhattan pedestrians, and any city dweller knows how important that is and how few retail establishments do it. And Starbucks does it with a smile, and they don't require that you buy anything. (I know they hope that people will come out of the restroom and decide to buy a latte, but believe me, that is not reward enough for letting everyone on the streets of Manhattan use your facilities.)

Thank you for the multiple links! I should point that, to be fair to Oxfam, it's at least likely that the divestment-freaks are just taking credit for the conclusion of an agreement that was due to end anyway, as Mick Hartley pointed out: http://mickhartley.typepad.com/blog/2005/03/solomonia_links.html

Nevertheless, the closer look the issue made me give Starbucks changed me from a Starbucks hater to a Starbucks...liker.
