Jews and the American debate on immigration: "For Jews, the immigration debate pits the heart against the head. In their gut, many feel that substantially reducing immigration betrays the legacy of their parents and grandparents. But a growing number believes that maintaining this policy betrays their children and grandchildren."

Stephen Steinlight discusses the issue in a recent Center for Immigration Studies Backgrounder, "High Noon to Midnight; Why Current Immigration Policy Dooms American Jewry."

Cool Hebrew utility.Via Presence, this incredibly cool thing: L2H, a new tool for typing Hebrew with an English-language keyboard. (And better than the freeware font I use in Word, this one lets you type left-to-right and the Hebrew magically materializes right-to-left.) It's created by Am HaAretz. !תודה רבה

More Lag B'Omer.

From what I can tell, most Diaspora Jews ignore this holiday; most Israeli Jews go to bonfires. (At least, that's the portrait the blogosphere paints.) Hence the relative paucity of American posts about it (though here's mine), and the relative plenty of Israeli ones...like these thoughts about the verse which says Akiva's students were killed because they failed to give honor to each other. Or this post about how Israeli holiday bonfires are starting to feature roasted marshmallows. (I'm pretty amused by the whole holiday shopping cart theft thing.)

Lag B'Omer. One of those minor holidays, much celebrated in Israel. Here's the deal about Lag B'Omer and weddings.

There are several events in Riverside Park today, but I think I'm going to finish staining and waxing my IKEA shelves so I can get my damn books and CDs out of the boxes already.
