Without Israel, they would not exist: Lawrence Henry lays out what would have happened in the post-colonial years in the Middle East had there been no Israel: they would have been even more of a mess, he concludes. The transformation of Arab countries -- to prosperity, modernity, and peace -- is "blocked by (their) obsession with Israel." That is the conundrum. Without Israel, they would not exist. Without the obsession, they will disappear.
